What is Aquaponics?

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics combines the best of aquaculture and hydroponics. In aquaponics, both fish and plants are grown together in one symbiotic, closed-loop system. Waste produced by fish is broken down and converted by beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms into nutrients that plants utilize for growth. Plants in turn act as natural filters that remove chemicals and clean a system’s water. Aquaponics produce healthy, fresh, organic fish and vegetables that are nutrient dense and low in fat. When aquaponics is used in conjunction with a controlled environment (such as a greenhouse), premium quality vegetables and fruits can be grown year-round. Aquaponics is a sustainable system that can be used to raise fresh fish and grow organic vegetables for your family, community, or as a profit generator in a commercial farm setting.

Aquaponics is also an excellent alternative to traditional organic gardening. Aquaponic systems provide a sustainable method of producing both plants and fish year round. Unlike traditional gardening or hydroponic methods, aquaponic systems harnesses nature's balance without the use of synthetic fertilizers or harmful pesticides. All aquaponic systems provide plants with optimum nutrition by utilizing the waste produced by the fish in conjunction with beneficial bacteria. It is these naturally occurring bacteria that convert the fish waste into nitrate that the plants utilize to produce rapid growth, and healthy organic fruits and vegetables that you and your family can enjoy. In addition to the vegetables that you can harvest from the system, you can also produce wholesome low-fat fish that are naturally high in omega-3's providing you & your family with fresh organic produce and fish all year round!
